India's Master Sitarists & Vocalists Perform at Meditation Retreat
Join us for a beautiful evening of sitar music and vocals with two of India's most
acclaimed musicians from Benares (Varanasi), India. The concert will begin at 7:30
at the Ananda Meditation Retreat temple, located at the Ananda Institute campus.
As an added option, you can begin your evening by joining us for a delicious vegetarian
Indian banquet at the Ananda Meditation Retreat dining room, across the garden from
the temple where the musicians will be performing. The retreat meditation
gardens and Babaji pool are enchanting this time of year. The retreat is located

Indian Music in absolute perfection. Pandit Shivanth Mishra, Lecturer and Head of
the Music Department at the Sanskrit University of Benares, is a master of the sitar.
The vocal basis is characteristic of classical indian music, the instrument music
following the example of the human voice. This meditational music lives from improvisation,
neverthertheless rising to a peak of excitement and tension. Deobrat Mishra, the
son of Pandit Shivanth, was honoured as India's best sitar players award of the
year 1995 In the year 2000 he received SurMani ( Jewels of sound) award in Mumbay
- India. Using the sitar, an instrument steeped in the tradition of 2000 years,
these two musicans evoke a mood of rapt inner contemplation which quickly casts
