Yogananda suggested these meditations to “help the spiritual aspirant release his soul from confinement in the body to its eternal freedom in infinity.”

As soon as you wake, sit upright, look out of the open window into the vastness of the sky—or if you cannot see the sky from your window, mentally visualize it. Imagine your mind watching your body, the room, and the sky simultaneously. Meditate for a few minutes until you feel that you are the body, the room, and the sky. You can also practice this meditation in a beautiful outdoor setting, during the day or night.

 —

Meditate with closed eyes. Mentally say, “I dissolve my body in darkness.” Watch the limitless dark space of eternity spread above, beneath, in front, behind, within, and without—everywhere.  Then, visualize a sealed rainbow balloon of light surrounding your body. This rubber balloon of light can never burst, no matter how you blow your luminous breath into it.

Exhale very slowly and visualize this balloon of light expanding with your luminous breath until it becomes big enough to contain star clusters, universes, and planetary and solar systems, including your earth and your body.

Concentrate at the point between the eyebrows. Forget the body, the house, the earth, the sun and sky; forget flesh, thoughts, and feelings. Feel only the vastness within yourself.

Repeat to yourself, “I am Infinite, I am Infinite, I am Infinite.” Go on mentally affirming this until you feel that you are beyond everything. Say, “I am timeless, I am space-less, I am beyond body, thought, and speech; beyond matter and mind. I am Infinite, I am Infinite Blessedness.” Meditate on that.
